Welterweight (63.5-71 kilograms), Men

The weight for this category had changed since Tokyo, from 63-69 kg to 63½-71 kg. Reigning multiple Olympic medalist Roniel Iglesias of Cuba had retired and did not try to defend his title. The top seeded boxer was Australian Shannan Davey, who surprisingly lost to Bulgaria’s Rami Kiwan by a unanimous decision. Kiwan then lost to bronze medalist Omari Jones (USA) in the quarter-finals.

Like the lightweight division, the welterweight division was won by the unseeded Uzbeki Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev. Muydinkhujaev had a bye in round one, followed by two comfortable unanimous points wins against Egypt’s Omar Elawady and Denmark’s Nikolai Terteryan. The semi-final against Omari Jones was a close contest won by Muydinkhujaev on a split 3-2 decision, one judge having Muydinkhujaev as the winner in all three rounds, another giving Jones as the winner of all three rounds! The final, against second seeded Mexican Marco Verde, was a much easier contest for Muydinkhujaev, winning by a unanimous decision.

Briton Lewis Richardson, who won his two opening bouts by split 3-2 decisions, was the other losing semi-finalist, losing to Verde by a split 3-2 decision. These were the only medals won by Mexico and Great Britain at the 2024 boxing tournament, which was particularly disappointing for the British team who had been amongst the leading boxing nations at recent Olympics.
