In June 2023, the IOC barred the International Boxing Association’s right to organize the 2024 Olympic Boxing due to “continuing irregularities in the areas of finance, governance, ethics, refereeing and judging.” Hence. the IOC organized the boxing tournament, including the qualification. Qualification came via several multi-games events (e.g., Pan-American Games), along with a number of separate qualifying tournaments.
All boxing divisions were competed for on a single-elimination basis, each contest consisting of three three-minute rounds with a one-minute interval between each round. The preliminary rounds of the boxing were held in the Arena Paris Nord, with the semi-finals and final held at the Stade Roland Garros. Each bout, where no stoppage occurred, had judges, each awarding 10 points to the boxer they judged the winner of each round, and 9 points to the other boxer, with further points being deducted at the referees discretion (e.g., for persistent holding).
In a move to equalize the number of male and female competitors, the number of men’s categories was reduced by one, to seven, since the Tokyo games, whereas the women’s categories increased by one, to six. There were some small differences in weight categories since Tokyo in both the men’s and women’s events. Based on the 2023 World Championships, Uzbekistan was expected to do well in the men’s divisions and they ended up as the most successful nation, with five gold medals. China was expected to dominate the women’s divisions – they finished with three gold medals and two silver medals.
Controversy came in two of the women’s divisions, with the winners Lin Yu-Ting (TPE) in the featherweight division and Imane Khelif (ALG) in the welterweight division having been disqualified from the 2023 World Championships for failing gender eligibility tests, although it was unclear why the two boxers had been disqualified.
