The biggest rivalry in international swimming was between the Australian and United States women in relay races, and the rivalry was only fueled before the Olympics when Australian legendary sprinter Cate Campbell stated that she hated hearing that “Star-Spangled Banner” on the podium, the American national anthem. Australia was favored in this event, having won gold in 2012, 2016, and 2020. Australia and the United States would go 1-2 in the qualifying round, easily advancing to the final. They were followed by China, Sweden, and France in 3-4-5.

Campbell was not swimming in Paris, but she got her wish as Australia won the gold medal for the fourth consecutive Olympics. It was not really close, as Mollie O’Callaghan put the Aussies ahead on the opening leg, with China second and the United States only fourth. Nobody got close to the Australian’s lead, as they won gold over the USA by 1.28 seconds, with China coming home for bronze.

Emma McKeon swam the third leg for Australia and won her 12th Olympic medal in the process. It extended her record for the most medals by any Australian Olympian, in any sport, and also tied Americans Dara Torres, Jenny Thompson, and Natalie Coughlin for the most by a female swimmer. By the end of Paris 2024, she would have 14 Olympic medals, although Katie Ledecky (USA) would equal that mark, making them the most be-medaled female swimmers in Olympic history.
