Format	Round-robin pools advanced teams to classification matches.

The Serbian men had won the water polo tournament at the last two editions of the Olympics but, since Tokyo, had not medaled at either the World or European Championships. Spain had won the 2022 Worlds and was the only nation to reach the podium in 2023 and 2024 as well, but both Italy and Greece had medaled twice in the intervening years. The 2023 and 2024 champions were Hungary and Croatia.

There were few surprises in the preliminary rounds, although Serbia lost three of its five matches and only advanced as the last qualifier. The team also only managed to squeak by Greece 12-11 in the quarter-finals, where Italy and Spain were also eliminated. It was stronger in the semi-finals, however, defeating the United States 10-6 to face Croatia in the final. In a 13-11 victory, Serbia defended its Olympic title a second time, while, in the bronze medal match, the United States bested Hungary in a penalty shootout to capture its first podium finish since silver at the 2008 Beijing Games.
