The Dutch team came to Paris as the firm favorites, being both the defending Olympic and Track World champions. Their line-up of Jeffrey Hoogland, Harrie Lavreysen, and Roy van den Berg had dominated the event since Tokyo. Only their fourth rider and alternate Matthijs Büchli, who won gold in Tokyo, was not present in Paris, as he had focused more on road races.

In the qualifying round, the Netherlands set an Olympic record with 41.279. Jack Carlin, Ed Lowe, and Hamish Turnbull of Team GB set the second-best time, but were more than half-a-second off the pace of the Dutch trio. The first round saw the home team of France qualify, along with Australia, Great Britain, and the Netherlands, with the Dutch riders setting a world record of 41.191 in the process.

The bronze medal final saw the Australian trio of Matthew Glaetzer, Leigh Hoffman, and Matthew Richardson just beat the French team of Florian Grengbo, Rayan Helal, and Sébastien Vigier. The final saw the Dutch team power home to victory against Great Britain, with a winning margin of almost a full second. They posted the first time below 41 seconds, with 40.949, to smash their earlier world record, with Harrie Lavreysen picking up the first of three golds in the Paris velodrome.
