The 2024 track cycling events were held at the Vélodrome de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, in the town of Montigny-le-Bretonneux, about 35 km south-west of the Olympic Village. The velodrome opened in January 2014 with room for 5,000 spectators. It was used to host the UCI Track World Championships in 2015 and 2022, along with the European Track Championships in 2016. The 2024 programme was the same as the one from the Tokyo Games, with men and women each competing in six events.
Great Britain had dominated track cycling at the Olympics in London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020, topping the medal table at each Games. Team GB’s power couple Jason Kenny and Laura Trott, however, had retired after the Tokyo Games to enjoy their new lives as parents. While Great Britain had topped the medal table at the 2023 Track Cycling World Championships, fierce competition was coming from the Netherlands, the United States, and Germany. In contrast, Australia had a disappointing World Championships. Despite winning six silvers, they failed to win a single gold medal on the track in Glasgow.
Team GB’s spot at the top of the track cycling medal table came to an end in Paris. Even though they won the most medals overall, with eight, only one of them was gold, which left them in fourth place overall. The Netherlands proved the nation to beat with their three golds, with Harrie Lavreysen standing on the top step of the podium for all of them. He enjoyed individual success in the sprint and the keirin, in addition to winning the team sprint with Roy van den Berg and Jeffrey Hoogland.
New Zealand finished second with two golds, both being won by Ellesse Andrews, who also won silver in the team sprint. The United States also won two golds, with Jennifer Valente winning the omnium and taking victory in the team pursuit. Australia, Italy, Portugal, and France all won one gold medal each.
