Shanne Braspennincx (NED) was the reigning Olympic keirin champion, but she did not return to the Paris Games to defend her title after making a surprise announcement to retire early in 2024. The other two medalists from the Tokyo Games, Ellesse Andrews (NZL) and Lauriane Genest (CAN), both competed in Paris, with Andrews also being the defending track World Champion. The silver and bronze medalists at the World championships, Martha Bayona (COL) and Lea-Sophie Friedrich (GER), also lined up in Paris, along with other favorites including Emma Finucane and Katy Marchant (both GBR), Hetty van de Wouw (NED), Emma Hinze (GER), and Mathilde Gros (FRA).

Most of the main favorites made it through their heats in the first round to advance to the quarter-finals. Marchant had a tough first heat where she finished third behind Andrews and Gros, but managed to progress through the repêchage. Bayona, the silver medalist at the Track World Championships in Glasgow, was not so fortunate, with her coming last in her heat, and then coming fourth in her repêchage to be eliminated.

The quarter-finals had three heats with the top-four riders in each advancing, making it relatively easier for the favorites to remain in contention for a medal. The first big shake-up came in the first of the semi-finals, which saw Lea-Sophie Friedrich eliminated when she came last, with Daniela Gaxiola (MEX) advancing to the medal final. The second semi-final saw the home favorite Mathilde Gros eliminated while Hetty van de Wouw, Katy Marchant, and Emma Hinze all progressed.

Final B saw Friedrich win ahead of Gros to finish seventh overall. The A Final was stacked with the best riders, including Hinze, Andrews, Marchant, and Finucane. Ellesse Andrews outsprinted Hetty van de Wouw to win her first of two gold medals in Paris, with Emma Finucane completing the podium.
