Although France was the defending gold medalist, Japan was world ranked #1 coming into Paris, and Italy had won five of the last eight World Championships in the event, including in 2017, 2018, and 2022. France was the leading nation in the event at the Olympics, having won gold eight times, with 17 medals, but they were only the fifth seed.

Eight teams started, with Canada, China, Egypt, Poland, and the United States rounding out the field. France, Italy, and Japan all won their first-round matches relatively easily, joined in the semi-finals by the USA.

Neither semi-final was particularly close, Japan taking down France 45-37, and Italy besting the United States by 45-38. This brought the final down to the top two seeds – Japan and Italy. After seven bouts in the final, Italy led, 36-35, but Yudai Nagano defeated Alessio Foconi 5-0, and Japan held on for the gold medal, 45-38. In the bronze medal match, the USA started out strongly, winning the first two bouts, but France won the final four bouts to triumph easily, 45-32.
