Four days earlier, Lee Kiefer and Lauren Scruggs had won gold and silver in the individual foil, and they would lead the USA team. They were only seeded #2 as Italy was very strong, with Martina Favaretto (2), Alice Volpi (3), and Arianna Errigo (4) world ranking only behind Kiefer individually. Italy had won four of the last six titles in this event, winning in 1996-2004 and 2012.

As expected, Italy and the United States won their first two matches and met in the final. In the last two bouts, Volpi defeated Kiefer 6-5 and Errigo took down Scruggs, 7-6, but to no avail, as the Americans by then had built up too big a lead and won the gold medal, 45-39. France was the third seed but lost to Canada in the first round. Canada met Japan for the bronze medal. After eight bouts, Japan led 32-29. In the final bout, Canada had the individual gold medalist, Eleanor Harvey, who met Yuka Ueno, and she won 3-1, but it was not enough to pull out the victory, as Japan took the bronze medal.
