France was the #1 ranked team in the world, but Hungary had won the 2022 and 2023 World Championships and was seeded second in Paris. However, in round one, the seventh seeded Japanese team put out Hungary, 45-37.
France went to the semi-finals against Korea, and also lost, 45-36, while Ukraine won the other semi-final over Japan easily, 45-32.
Olha Kharlan had won the bronze medal in individual sabre for Ukraine. The final match saw Korea ahead after eight bouts, 40-37, with Kharlan facing Jeon Ha-Yeong, but Jeon was no match for Kharlan, who won 8-2, giving Ukraine the victory, 45-42, and the gold medal.
This was only the fourth time this event was on the Olympic Programme, but Ukraine won its third medal in the event, after gold in 2008 and silver in 2016.
