The defending champion in the event was the ROC (Russian Olympic Committee), which was not allowed to take part in Paris. In Tokyo, they had narrowly defeated Japan and China, with just 0.6 points separating the three medalists. Japan and China had remained top level in the intervening years, with China winning the 2022 World title and Japan claiming the gold in 2023.

The Chinese gymnasts clearly led the qualifying, followed by Japan, with Great Britain, Ukraine and the USA several points behind. In the final, China dominated the early rotations. With just one rotation left, they were up three points over Japan. But, on his horizontal bar exercise, Su Weide fell twice. This gave him a score of just 11.600 – a point lower than any other gymnast. This dropped the Chinese back to second and put Japan in the lead. The remaining Chinese could not make up the gap, leaving Japan to win the gold by ½-a-point. For Japan, it was their eighth gold medal in the event.

Bronze went to the US, who were actually in silver medal position halfway. It was their first medal in the event since 2008, when they also won bronze.
