The United States had won this event in 2012, 2016, and 2020, and at nine of the last 11 Olympic Games. They were the clear favorites although they almost did not make the final.

In the heats, the USA ran 16-year-old Quincy Wilson on the opening leg. He had been the sensation of the USA Olympic Trials, and had recently run 44.20 for 400 metres, but he struggled in Paris and ran only 47.27 on his leg, handing off seventh to veteran Vernon Norwood. Fortunately, the USA runners came back and were able to get third in the heat to advance to the final.

The final turned out to be an epic match-up between the USA, Botswana, and Great Britain. Botswana, with Bayapo Ndori, led on the opening leg, but Britain then moved ahead due to Matt Hudson-Smith’s second leg of 43.08, with the USA in second and Botswana third.

Bryce Deadmon then put the Americans in the lead at the final exchange, but Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, the 200 metre gold medalist, ran the fastest leg of the event in 43.04 to close on Rai Benjamin. The USA held on for the gold medal, with Benjamin running 43.18, but only 1/10th second ahead of Botswana, as the USA ran 2:54.43 and Botswana 2:54.53, the second and third fastest times ever. USA broke the Olympic record, while Botswana, Great Britain and Japan broke their continental records, and Belgium and South Africa broke their national records.
