Angelo Taylor was primarily a 400 metre hurdler who won golds in the event at the 2000 and 2008 Olympics, adding a 4x400 metre relay gold in 2008, and a silver in the 4x4 relay in 2012. At the World Championships he won golds in the 4x400 relay in 2007, 2009, and 2011 and a bronze in the open 400 metres in 2007.
Taylor ran in college at Georgia Tech University. He was the NCAA Champion in 1998 in the 400 hurdles and placed second in 1997. He was US Champion in the 400 hurdles in 1999-2001. Taylor was ranked in the world top 10 in the 400 hurdles in 1998-2001, 2007-08, and 2010-12, ranking #1 in 2000 and #2 in 1998-99 and 2008.
Taylor was arrested in 2005 on charges of child molestation in two separate charges of having molested two 15-year-old girls. He pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was granted probation. However, he was coaching young women at the East Atlanta Track Club in the 2010s although he was in violation of the US Center for SafeSport’s code regarding sexual misconduct. In 2019 he was suspended from coaching by USA Track & Field for criminal misconduct involving a minor, with their statement reading “Accordingly, this individual is prohibited from participating, in any capacity, in any activity or competition authorized by, organized by, sanctioned by, or under the auspices of USATF or the USOC, and/or any Local Affiliated Organizations of USATF (including any USATF associations and clubs). This individual has been placed on USATF’s list of suspended individuals.”
