The scoring was high with the top seven shooters breaking the world record of 581, held by East German Thomas Pfeffer. Pfeffer himself shot 589, tying Soviet Igor Sokolov for first, but Sokolov won the shoot-off 97-95 for the gold medal. Pfeffer had placed fourth in 1976. The defending gold medalist, Aleksandr Gazov (URS) won another medal, placing third. The leaders after the slow run were Sokolov, Gazov, and East German Hans-Jürgen Helbig on the fast run, who placed only eighth overall.
