Eight fighters competed in a single-elimination tournament. The event was won by Chin Yu-Fang of Chinese Taipei, who had been a bronze medalist at the 1987 World Championship. Chin won the title by defeating Korean Lee Hwa-Jin in the final on points. Chin would later win the World title in 1989.
