Freestyle moguls was contested as a demonstration event at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, but moguls would become a full-medal event in 1992 at Albertville. Only six women competed with the event won by the relative unknown Tatjana Mittermayer of West Germany. She would not remain unknown, winning a silver medal in moguls at the 1998 Winter Olympics, and winning one silver and three bronze medals at the World Championships between 1989-97. The 1986 World Champion, Mary Jo Tiampo, did not compete in Calgary.
