At the 1904 Olympics, this event was called “Junior Men’s Foil”. However, at that time period, the term “junior” did not refer to the athlete’s age but rather to their competitive ability. In the United States, you were considered a “junior fencer” until you won a medal in a fencing competition. So, you could be a 70-year-old fencer who had been fencing for 50 years, but you would still be a “junior” if you hadn’t won a fencing medal yet. If you look at the fencers who competed in this event, you’ll find Arthur Fox, who was celebrating his 26th birthday that day, Theodore Carstens, who was 25-years-old, and Wilfred Holroyd, who was 26-years-old.
