Beach handball is a newer, popular form of indoor handball, played on a sand surface, with slightly different rules. It has never been on the Olympic Programme, but boys’ and girls’ events were contested at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, replacing the youth handball tournaments staged in previous editions of the competition.
Before appearing at the Youth Olympics, beach handball was already being contested by senior teams at the World Games. The discipline appeared in the programme three times as an invitational sport, from 2001-2009, before making its official début in the 2013 edition, since when it has been continuously contested, always with men and women events.
Despite never having appeared on the Olympic Programme, the discipline is governed worldwide by the International Handball Federation (IHF), which was founded on 11 July 1946, in København, Denmark, and has 211 affiliated national federations as of January 2026. The IHF succeeded the International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF), which had been founded on 4 August 1928.
The first IHF Beach Handball World Championships were held in 2004, in El Gouna, Egypt, taking place every two years since then (with the exception of the 2020 edition, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
