Description

Beach handball is a newer, popular form of indoor handball, played on a sand surface, with slightly different rules. It has never been on the Olympic Programme, but boys’ and girls’ events were contested at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

Despite never having appeared on the Olympic Programme, the discipline is governed worldwide by the International Handball Federation (IHF), which was founded on 11 July 1946, in København, and had 210 affiliated national federations as of 2024. The IHF succeeded the International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF), which had been founded on 4 August 1928. The first IHF Beach Handball World Championships happened in 2004, taking place every two years since then (with the exception of the 2020 edition, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
