Futsal is an indoor, smaller version of football (soccer), which is played with five-persons on each team. The sport has been contested at several regional multi-sport games, including the Pan American Games, but it has never been on the Olympic Programme. A boy’s and girls’ tournament was held at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
Despite never having appeared on the Olympic Programme, futsal is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), which also oversees association football and beach soccer. FIFA was formed on 21 May 1904 in Paris, with seven founding members, and recognized men’s futsal as a discipline in 1986, and women’s futsal in 2023. As of 2024, FIFA has 211 member associations.
