Acrobatics began as a specific sport in the Soviet Union, in the 1930s. Acrobatic gymnastics is a discipline of gymnastics in which a couple or a team performs dance moves, gymnastics moves, tumbling, and acrobatic moves set to music.
A mixed event in this discipline was contested at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. At the senior level, acrobatic gymnastics has also been contested continuously at the World Games since 1993, with men, women, and mixed events.
Despite never having appeared on the Olympic Programme, acrobatic gymnastics is governed by World Gymnastics (WG), which also governs the Olympic disciplines of artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampolining. The federation was founded on 23 July 1881, in Liège, Belgium, with three founding members: Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. It was originally called the Bureau des Fédérations Européennes de Gymnastique (FEG) until 1921, and was rebranded as the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) between 1921-2025. As of January 2026, the organization has 167 member federations.
