Yuriy Shliakhov competed in springboard diving at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. He won 22 national titles in Ukraine. Shliakhov won a bronze on springboard at the 2007 Universiade and another bronze in synchro springboard at the 2004 European Championships.
Shliakhov graduated from Dnipropetrovsk National University, after which he became a lecturer there in physical education and sports. From 2013-16 he managed the Dniepro cheerleading federation. Shliakhov died at only 36-years-old from a chronic heart condition.
