Joseph Hasenfus was from Needham, Massachusetts. He competed in the C-2 10K alongside his brother, Walter. Their sister, Olive Hasenfus, was a sprinter, who was named as an alternate to the 1928 US Olympic track & field squad. His nephew, Richie Hasenfus, later became a top high school and college hockey player in Massachusetts and was later a golf professional in the state.
