Biography

Xu Chao was a talented Chinese track cyclist who won multiple medals during his career including gold at the Asian Games. He specialised in the individual and team sprint, winning gold in the latter discipline at the 2013 Asian Championships in New Delhi, India. The following year Xu won silver in the team sprint at both the Asian Games and the Asian Championships. His consistent performances eventually earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games where he came sixth in the individual event. Two years later Xu won team gold at the 2018 Asian Games when China beat the more-fancied Malaysian team. He returned to the Olympics for the 2020 Tokyo Games where he rode in both the individual sprint and the keirin. Tragically, Xu was only 30-years-old when he was killed in a road accident whilst on a training ride with his team in November 2024.
