Verner Blaudzun

In 1964 Danish cyclist Verner Blaudzun won the youth team time trial title at the Nordic Championships before repeating the victory the following year in the amateur race. In 1966 Blaudzun, Jørgen Hansen, Ole Højlund Pedersen, and Flemming Wisborg won gold in the team time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Nürburgring. One year later Blaudzun, Hansen, Leif Mortensen, and Henning Pedersen narrowly missed out on repeating their success when they finished second to the Swedish quartet at the championships in Heerlen.

Blaudzun became the Danish amateur road race champion in 1968 and earned a place on the Olympic team. At the Mexico City Games he was part of the quartet that finished fourth in the team time trial, just over two minutes behind the Italian team. Blaudzun continued to have success back in Denmark, winning the team time trial title at the national championships in 1969 and 1971, and another amateur road title in 1970. After missing out on the 1972 Olympics in München, he was selected to compete at the 1976 Games in Montréal, with Blaudzun, Hansen, Gert Frank, and Jørn Lund winning bronze in the team time trial.

Blaudzun continued to be consistent, with multiple podium places at the Danish and Nordic cycling championships. He made his third and final appearance at the Olympics in 1980, placing 42nd in the road race at the Moskva Games. His son Michael became a five-time national cycling champion.
