Jørgen Emil Hansen had a lengthy cycling career that saw him become a World champion, a Danish champion, and an Olympic medallist. In 1962 Hansen had three podiums on stages at the Milk Race in England, finishing tenth overall, and placing third in the points classification. The following year he finished as the runner-up in the amateur road race at the Danish national championships. His breakthrough year came in 1966 when he, Verner Blaudzun, Ole Højlund Pedersen, and Flemming Wisborg won gold in the team time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Nürburgring, West Germany. Hansen would also win silver in the same event at the World Championships in both 1967 and 1969.
Hansen won his first national title in 1968 with victory in the team time trial at the Danish championships. This earned him a place on the Olympic team for the Mexico City Games, where he just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the same event. Four years later he once again won the national team time trial title to earn another place at the Olympics. This time, however, the Danish team could only finish 11th in the team time trial in München.
Hansen persevered with his career, becoming both the Danish road race and team time trial champion in 1975. The following year he competed at his third consecutive Olympics, winning bronze in the team time trial with Verner Blaudzun, Gert Frank, and Jørn Lund in Montréal. Hansen continued to compete for several more years, finishing second at the Danish championships in both 1980 and 1982. He later won gold in his age group at the 2015 World Masters Road Race.
