Jens Fiedler

German track cyclist Jens Fiedler won three gold medals and two bronze medals in his Olympic career between 1992 and 2004. In 1992 and 1996 he won the individual sprint and in 2004 the team sprint event. In 2000 at Sydney, he added two bronze medals in the individual sprint and the keirin.

Fiedler burst onto the scene by winning the 1988 sprint Youth World Championship while representing East Germany. The same year he won the national title and in 1991 he was amateur World Champion. In 1995 and 2003, he was World Champion in the team sprint, and in 1998 and 1999 he won the keirin. At the World Championships he also won another five silver and three bronze medals.

Fiedler retired in 2005 after the Berlin six-days. Directly thereafter he tested positive for amphetamines but claimed it was due to contaminated supplements. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf in 1993, Germany’s highest sports award. Professionally, Fiedler worked with the municipal utilities in his hometown Chemnitz and became manager of a pro cycling team.
