Fred Grinham was born in London, England, but emigrated to the United States in 1893 and became a US citizen in 1900. He competed in three cycling events at the 1904 Olympics. He also rode the one-mile handicap in 1904, considered a non-Olympic event, and finished third. Grinham competed in multiple sports. He was a Missouri state cycling champion in 1902 and in 1903 fought in the Missouri boxing championships.
Grinham later took up automobile dirt track racing, and in 1906 toured Europe by car, rare for that era. On his return he opened a automobile dealership in St. Louis. In 1925 Grinham moved to Coral Gables, Florida where he worked in real estate development and managed the Coral Gables Country Club. He later worked for the city in the license division, retiring in 1956.
