Biography

Austrian-born Harry Martin was a member of Toronto’s Broadway Cycling Club and was an endurance specialist, who at one time held the Canadian distance record for 24 hours of continuous cycling. In 1912 he won the Dunlop Trophy race and in 1920 was selected to represent Canada at the 1920 Summer Olympics, coming in 38th among 42 finishers in the road race. As two of his teammates, Norman Webster and Harold Bounsall, failed to finish the race, with Herb McDonald coming in 31st, the Canadians did not place in the team rankings. Martin remained active in cycling after the Games and even proposed a 30-day, 3,000 mile bicycle tour from Toronto to Los Angeles as late as May 1922, but less than three months later he died in a Weston, Ontario sanitarium of an acute illness.
