Marty Nothstein

Marty Nothstein was a track sprinter who competed at three Olympic Games and in 2000 won the match sprint, the first American to win that event against a full international field. Nothstein had been the silver medalist in the match sprint at Atlanta in 1996. At the World Championships he won seven medals with three golds. His golds were in the sprint and keirin in 1994, and the keirin in 1996. Nothstein won four gold medals at the Pan American Games. He won the sprint in 1995 and in 1999 won the sprint, keirin, and team sprint. Nothstein also won 34 US titles on the track.

After the 2000 Olympics Nothstein lost almost 14 kg (30 lbs) and turned to the roads, where he had some success, although mostly in the United States.

Nothstein retired from cycling in 2006 and began racing dragsters in the NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car Events. He finished 11th in points in the 2007 NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car season. Nothstein won two races in the 2007 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season – one at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, Florida and the other at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois.

Nothstein lived in eastern Pennsylvania, managing the land on his farm, and serving as executive director of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, when in 2015 he elected to go into politics, and successfully ran for the Board of Commissioners of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. In 2018 Nothstein ran for the United States House of Representatives in Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, but was defeated. He also ran in a special election for another Congressional District but was also unsuccessful.
