Brian Glencross appeared at six Olympic Games for Australia in hockey (field), three times as a player (1964-72), captaining the 1968 Olympic team, and three times as the women’s head coach (1984-92). After his retirement as a player, during which time he earned 93 international caps, he helped establish the hockey program for the Australian Institute of Sport. He led the Australian women from 1980-95, leading them to the Olympic gold medal in 1988.
Glencross was named the Western Australia Sports Federation Sportsman of the Year in 1968. His honors included being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the Western Australia Hall of Champions, and the Hockey Australia Hall of Fame, and he received the Medal of the Order of Australia, the Australian Sports Medal, and the Centenary Medal. In his later years, Glencross developed Parkinson’s Disease and dementia and eventually succumbed to these after also contracting COVID-19.
