Patrick Nilan made his début for the Australian field hockey team in 1961 and went on to play in 73 matches, scoring 11 goals. Nilan was part of the national team that won bronze at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics after a 3–2 win against Spain in the medal round. Four years later the Australian team went one better when they won silver at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He competed at his third and final Olympics in München in 1972 where Australian finished fifth overall. Nilan was awarded with the Order of Australia Medal for services to hockey and was inducted into Hockey Australia’s Hall of Fame.
