Biography

Paddy Ruttle was born in Bray, Ireland in 1931 before moving to Canada. In 1964 Ruttle was part of the first Canadian field hockey team to compete at the Olympics after beating the United States in a qualification match one year earlier. At the Tokyo Games he played in five of Canada’s seven matches, including their only win in the tournament, beating Hong Kong 2–1. In 2016 the entire team were inducted into the Field Hockey Canada Hall of Fame. Ruttle later returned to Ireland, living there until his death in Dublin in March 2019.
