Biography

Susanne Bonnard was the daughter of Gustave and Jeanne Bonnard; her father was a notable businessman and the proprietor of the Bonnard Frères department store in Lausanne. Both of her parents were active members of the Salle Dufour fencing club in the 1910s, where she began fencing at a young age. In 1924, she was selected alongside her clubmate Emma Fitting as one of two female fencers on the Swiss delegation to the Paris Olympic Games. She finished fifth in her pool in the foil competition, her only victory of five bouts was against Gizella Tary of Hungary.

Suzy Bonnard was later involved as a women’s suffragist advocate in the mid-1920s, traveling abroad to attend events. In the mid-1920s, she married into the noted Lausanne fencing family when she wed Dr. Henri Fitting, a brother of 1924 Olympic compatriots Edouard, Fréderic and Emma Fitting. She died in 1967 after a long illness at the age of 63.
