Austrian fencer Richard Verdereber won a silver medal with the sabre team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, and in the individual foil event, he won the bronze medal. Verderber was also entered for the individual épée and sabre events but did not start for unknown reasons. Nevertheless, he was the most successful Austrian athlete at Stockholm.
Verderber was a military man by profession since 1902 and also became a fencing master in 1907 at the K.u.k. Military Fencing and Gymnastic Institute. Between 1912-14 he won four Austrian Championships in sabre and foil. He then coached the Austrian Olympic team and prepared them for the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
During World War I, Verderber was a company commander, and a battalion commander from 1916. He was awarded several war decorations. Towards the end of the war, Verderber attended the army storm instructor course in Zloczow and became commander of storm battalion 25. After the War, Verderber remained in the military and was promoted several times.
