Biography

Marcel Berré represented the fencing club La Concorde in Antwerpen (Antwerp) and was also its treasurer in the 1920s. One of his early achievements was a third place in the individual foil event at the 1911 Belgian Championships. He competed in four editions of the Olympic Games from 1908 to 1924, mostly with the foil but in 1912 also with épée and sabre. It took until 1924, when he was 41, that he finally won a medal, silver in the foil team event. Berré, however, competed only in the semi-final against Denmark, where he lost all four of his bouts. At the 1924 Olympics, he also acted as a referee in the men’s individual foil event. In 1959, he was mentioned as vice-president of the Fédération Francophone des Cercles d’Escrime de Belgique (French-speaking Federation of Fencing Clubs of Belgium).
