Biography

Gaston Salmon came from a Jewish family and, following his father, worked for a railway company. In 1906 he married Fernande Betsy Ermens, with whom he had two sons. The family settled in the Bruxelles’ (Brussels) municipality of Etterbeek. There, he worked as a ticket inspector for the local railways. In World War I, Salmon served as a lieutenant in the Belgian army since 1917. He was killed on the Yser Front in a German bombing raid. Posthumously, he was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1935.

Fencing for the Salle Dupont in Bruxelles Salmon represented Belgium at the 1912 Olympic Games in the foil and épée individual events. In the épée team event, he won gold with the Belgian team. His gold medal was auctioned in 2017 in Hollywood for 15,000 Euros together with other sports trophies.
