Biography

Josef Pfeiffer was one of the best Bohemian fencers in the years before and after World War I. Representing ČŠK Riegel he became champion of the lands of the Bohemian Crown (Bohemia plus Moravia and Austrian Silesia) in 1912 with the épée. In these championships he also placed second in foil (1909, 1910) and épée (1910) as well as third in sabre (1913). In 1922, he won another two silver medals at the Czechoslovakian championships in épée and silver. Pfeiffer was a member of the board of his club prior to World War I.

Pfeiffer was selected for the Bohemian team at the 1908 Olympic Games but did not start. Four years later in Stockholm he placed fourth with the sabre team after losing to the Netherlands on touches delivered after a draw on bouts. In 1919, he was also part of the Czechoslovakian fencing team at the Inter-Allied Games in Paris in the rank of private.
