Archie Corble

A sabre specialist, Archie Corble appeared in team and individual events at the 1920, 1924 and 1928 Olympics without obtaining a podium finish. He was the 1922 and 1927 national sabre champion and won international honours for England and also for Great Britain in three Thompson Trophy contests against the United States in 1923, 1926, and 1930. Corble was an avid collector of fencing and duelling books and accumulated the largest collection of its kind in the world; he left his to the University of Leuven, Belgium, as a contribution towards rebuilding its library, which had been destroyed in both World Wars. Following his death in 1946, an international sabre competition, for the Corble Memorial Cup, was inaugurated in his honour.
