Elmar Borrmann

Épée fencer Elmar Borrmann, twin brother of non-Olympian Igor Borrmann, won two Olympic gold medals and one silver at four Olympic Games in 1984, 1988 (representing West Germany), and 1992 and 1996 (representing re-unified Germany). In 1984 he won team gold and finished sixth individually. Four years later he won team silver, and at Barcelona in 1992 added another team gold and was placed fifth individually. Finally, at Atlanta the team finished an unfortunate fourth and Borrmann failed to reach the quarter-finals in the individual event.

Borrmann also won 12 medals at World Championships. He won team gold in 1986 and 1995, silver in 1979, 1983, 1988-89, 1994 and 1997, and bronze in 1991 and 1993. He also won individual gold in 1983, and bronze in 1981. Borrmann won the German individual épée title in 1977, 1981, and 1984. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.

By profession, Borrmann became a financial broker. In 2019, he was sentenced to a two year suspended prison sentence following a fraud trial at the Würzburg regional court for neglecting his duty to inform his financiers. The amount of damage was around 10.9 million euros. Borrmann had collected money from investors through his company in order to invest it profitably, but the business did not develop as promised.
