Biography

Max Geuter was an épée fencer competing for the mixed German team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and for West Germany at the 1968 Mexico City and 1972 München Games. He was a member of the épée teams that finished sixth and fourth, respectively, in 1964 and 1968, while at München the team was eliminated in the first round. He was never nominated for the individual events, which frustrated him. In 1963 Geuter was West German épée champion, while in 1964 and 1972 he finished second, and in 1970 third.

Geuter also fenced foil and finished seventh in that weapon in the 1959 West German Championships. He competed in the individual foil event at the 1961 World Championships for West Germany. In the mid-1960s, he lived in the United States for over a year and was allowed to fence in two US Championships. He won the 1966 US foil championship and finished fifth in the épée, while on a business assignment. He also competed at the US Championships in 1967, but sprained his ankle badly and could not duplicate his result.

Geuter then became a sports administrator. He was a member of the Bavarian Fencing Federation, vice-president and board member of the West German Fencing Federation (DFeB) from 1978-2017, secretary-general of the European Fencing Federation (EFC) until 2018, and from 1993-2017 was an executive board member with the International Fencing Federation (FIE).
