Biography

Harald Hein was a talented fencer at both épée and foil. He medalled at the World Junior Championships with both weapons (winning the 1970 foil title), before breaking through into the seniors. His greatest successes came as a member of the West German team, winning three world titles, 1973 (épée), 1977 (foil), and 1983 (foil), as well as an Olympic title in 1976 (foil) and five other medals. Individually, his best performance was second at the 1977 World Championships (foil), and third in 1978 and 1985. He also won five West German foil titles between 1969 and 1979.

At the Olympics, Hein won a foil team gold in 1976 and a silver in 1984. Due to the US-led boycott of the 1980 Moskva Games he could not participate. By profession, he was CEO of a transport company at Tauberbischofsheim. Hein also worked as a fencing coach before passing away of a brain tumor at the age of 58.
