Sabre fencer Jürgen Nolte finished fourth, sixth and fifth with the (West) German sabre teams at the 1984 Los Angeles, 1988 Seoul, and 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Individually, he was eliminated in the quarter-finals in 1984 but was placed eighth in both 1988 and 1992. In 1989 he won a team silver at the World Championships and two bronze medals in 1990-91. Nolte won eight individual national titles between 1980 and 1990.
Returning from the 1989 Worlds, Nolte survived the cash-landing of United Airlines Flight 232 at Sioux City following a catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine. By profession, Nolte became a sport and biology school teacher at Bonn-Tannenbusch.
