Biography

Rudolf Kárpáti was a member of the noted Hungarian fencing teams that dominated sabre competition for more than three decades. In team sabre, he won Olympic gold medals at four successive Olympics (1948-1960) and he was a member of the winning team at five World Championships (1953-1955, 1957-1958). Individually, Kárpáti was twice Olympic sabre champion (1956 and 1960) and twice World sabre champion (1954 and 1959). After his retirement, Rudolf Kárpáti became President of the Hungarian Fencing Federation and an administrator with the Fédération International d’Éscrime (FIE). He was also a talented musician and was the leader of the People’s Army Central Artistic Ensemble.
