Péter Marót

Péter Marót started his sporting career as a track and field athlete and swimmer before switching to fencing and representing BVSC. In 1964, he won his first junior foil title, and the following year won the individual sabre gold medal at the World Junior Championships, which opened the door for him to join the Hungarian national team.

Marót won the individual sabre national title twice (1972, 1975), and won the European Champion’s Cup three times with his new affiliation, Vasas. He won a team sabre silver medal at the 1971 World Championships and, a year later at the München Olympics, he was the individual silver and team bronze medallist. At the 1973 World Championships in Göteburg (Gothenburg), Marót and the Hungarian sabre team won the gold medal.

He was a member of the Hungarian sabre teams that won the bronze medal at the World Championships in 1974 and the silver medal in 1975 where he was also individual bronze medalist. The Hungarian team just missed the podium at the Montréal Olympics, finishing fourth. Although Marót was a member of the bronze medal team at the 1977 World Championships in Buenos Aires, he was not nominated for the Moscow Olympics.

Marót graduated from the university of Physical Education in 1968 as a coach in sabre, and was a head coach at Budapest Honvéd from 1980, and then as a head of the department at his former affiliation, BVSC, and GEAC in Gödöllö. In April 2016, Marót suffered a stroke that resulted to him being wheelchair-bound. He suffered a serious car accident shortly before his 75th birthday, resulting his death three weeks later.
