Biography

With the sabre, Gianfranco Dalla Barba won two Olympic medals as a member of the Italian team. In the final of the 1984 tournament, Italy defeated France easily (9-3). Four years later, the Italians again defeated the French, this time by only a single touch, in the bronze medal match. At the World Championships, Dalla Barba won five medals, a silver individually (1983), and two silvers and two bronzes with the team. He has also won the Italian sabre title twice, in 1982 and 1984. In 2015 he received the Gold Collar for Sporting Merit from the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI).
