Dick Dyer attended Penn State University and later fenced for Salle Csiszar in Philadelphia. Dyer, huge for a fencer at 6-4 (195 cm), started out at Penn State in football, but left to join the fencing squad. In addition to the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, Dyer competed at the 1955 Pan American Games, where he helped the US win gold in team sabre, silver in team épée, and added an individual bronze medal in sabre. Dyer’s wife was Louise Knab, a top female fencer in the US, who served as an alternate to the women’s fencers in both 1956 and 1960.
