James Margolis attended Columbia University, graduating in 1958. He was 1957 NCAA Champion with the épée. In 1960 Margolis was in the US Navy, serving as a lieutenant. He placed second in épée in 1959 and third in 1960 at the U.S. National Championships.
After graduating from Columbia Margolis had a successful 40-year career in life insurance, primarily with Northwestern Mutual. He was an active member of the School of Practical Philosophy and did extensive community volunteer work.
