Alfred Sauer was born in Germany but settled in Illinois in the United States, moving there with his family in 1891. He later represented the Illinois Athletic Club, but Sauer learned to fence at the Chicago Turngemeinde when he was a teenager. Sauer won US Championships with all three weapons, winning the sabre in 1909, épée in 1913, and foil in 1916. He also qualified for the 1912 Olympic team in, and competed in, all three weapons. Sauer was buried in his fencing uniform, which was his wish.
