Renato Brito Cunha was a renowned basketball coach in Brazil who saw success with both the men’s and women’s national teams. With the men’s team Brito Cunha won bronze at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics after they beat Puerto Rico 76–60 in the third-place playoff. Four years later Brazil just missed out on a medal when they finished fourth at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
With the women’s national team Brito Cunha led them to gold at the Pan American Games in 1967. That same year the Brazilian women’s team also won gold at the South American Championships before retaining their title the following year. He returned to coach the men’s team in the 1980s, with them winning gold at the South American Championships and silver at the Pan American Games in 1983, along with finishing ninth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. From 1989 to 1997 Brito Cunha served as the President of the Brazilian Basketball Confederation.
