Marc Rosset

Marc Rosset was a Swiss tennis player who played professionally from 1988 to 2005. Rosset’s best year in the sport was in 1992 when he won a Grand Slam doubles title and an Olympic gold medal, and played in the final of the Davis Cup. Ranked world #8 in the doubles (also in 1992), and #9 in the singles (September 1995), Rosset earned almost $7 million in prize money during his career.

Rosset won his first ATP singles title in September 1989 in Genèva, Switzerland, beating Guillermo Pérez Roldán in straight sets. From October 1990 to February 2000 he won a further 14 ATP singles titles. Rosset won eight ATP doubles titles during his career with his first victory coming in September 1991, also in Genèva, when he partnered with Sergi Bruguera. Three of his eight titles came with compatriot Jakob Hlasek, as well as one win each with Goran Ivanišević, Javier Sánchez Vicario, and Tim Henman.

In 1992 Rosset and Hlasek won the doubles title at the French Open with victory against the duo of David Adams and Andrey Olkhovsky. A few months after his Grand Slam win Rosset won gold in the singles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics after beating Jordi Arrese in five sets. In December 1992 Rosset represented Switzerland in the final of the Davis Cup against the United States. Despite winning his match against Jim Courier, who was ranked the world #1 at the time, the Swiss team finished as runners-up to the Americans.

As a singles player Rosset’s best Grand Slam performance came at the 1996 French Open when he reached the semi-finals where he lost to Michael Stich. At the 1998 US Open Rosset lost in the opening round of the singles to Dominik Hrbatý in straight sets. This early exit from the tournament resulted in Rosset changing his flight plans. He was originally booked to fly on Swissair Flight 111, which later crashed into the ocean just off the coast of Nova Scotia, killing all on board.
